Report:
Almost 4000 people from all over the world came to see BOTY 1999 in Leipzig on the 18th september. 15 crews from 12 different international countries entered the competition and hundreds of b-boys and b-girls were in the crowd and danced in the circles.
All promised artists were there and made the BOTY 1999 to a great event: The hosts Trix and Spax entertained the audience, the DJs Swiftrock, Leacy and Studio 17 played the right music for the b-boys and the audience. In the first round all crews performed each about 10 minutes in front of the international jury. The shows and routines of most of the crews were no highlights, except some like "Fresh In Attack", "The Family" and of course "Spartanic Rockers" who finally won the price of the best show once again after 1998. In one of the breaks between the shows, BOTY reminded to "Jo" from "Spartanic Rockers" who recently died. His whole crew from Japan and Switzerland came on stage, Takeo spoke a couple of words and a short film about "Jo" was shown. This really was a memorable moment in the BOTY history... R.I.P. "Jo" !
After the "show round" the judges had to decide about the 4 best crews to battle in the finals for the place 1 to 4 which was no easy job. During the judges discussion on stage the crowd saw an amazing b-girl show with about 20 international participants. Once more the b-girls made clear that they are getting stronger each year.
After that the hosts announced the 4 crews to battle which lead to problems within the crews and audience, like almost every year. This year the French crew "The Family" was not satisfied with only being in the battle for third place against "Bag of Trix" from Canada. From the beginning on it seemed like the French crew only came to have a revenge against "Rock Force Crew" from the USA but this year the judges decide in another way cause "The Family" was not showing enough (break-) dance skillz in their show. It ended up in that the French crew denied to battle against the Canadian crew and went of stage after the first moves. This really was a shame for the judges, the audience, for the organiser and most of all for "Bag of Trix" who wanted to have a fair battle but became no chance cause of "The Families" misbehaviour. Anyway, the planned battle for third place ended up in a show battle of "Bag of Trix" vs. The judges and some other single dancers including Storm from "Battle Squad" who showed everybody that he is developing his locking skillz very well !
The battle for first place was against "Rock Force Crew" (USA) - title defenders and "Suicidal Lifestyle" (Hungary). In the first round the hungarian crew showed a great mixture of some routines, battle moves and strong power moves with a very hard "old school" - influence. In the final battle, which lasted 20 minutes, the crowd saw the highest standard of b-boying at the moment. Incredible new power moves and freezes in the typical US style by "Rock Force Crew" and on the other side enormous combinations once again with a lot of old school elements and influences by "Suicidal Lifestyle". It ended in a victory of the hungarian crew which was a fair decision and also accepted by the "Rock Force Crew" who had the best single dancer of the night "Vietnam".
Finally the organisers hope that the crews and the audience enjoyed BOTY 1999, the athmosphere was great and relaxed and the view on the stage was nice for everybody including the big video screen.
According the finances BOTY 1999 was a big mess, the organisers lost more than 30.000 marks cause they needed some more spectators who maybe didnt come cause the event took place in far eastern Germany. But most of all the organisers were shocked by the arrogant misbehaviour of many crews and artists. Too many artists take the service they get at the BOTY without thinking about it. I mean shuttle bus services, catering, accomodation and much more. They also forget the costs which are caused by these services. Some of the artists should think about their behaviour and also compare BOTY to other events ! We, the organisers, for sure will change a lot of thinks for next year and will be much more strict.
Most of all I (Thomas) want to thank my whole team for the great job. The problems we had the weeks before BOTY 1999 were bigger than ever, including the split from "From Here To Fame", finding a new office, ...A lot of artists dont give respect to it but I know about it - it was the hardest BOTY we ever had !
See you all at BOTY 2000 in Hannover ...

REPORT: (by Juny KP / Super Sonic's B-Boys)
The very first "Batalha do Ano de BBoys" - BBoys Battle of the Year - took place at SESCs Belenzinho and Itaquera. Thousands of bboys were there, from the whole states of brasil.
About 18 breakdance groups were there participating in that incredible event. Besides the contest, the whole four elements were there: Graffiti Lectures and Demonstration, DJ workshop, MC Freestyle Stage and the shows.
Afrika Bambaata was there, so was Grand Master Flash, De La Soul, Jungle Brothers, Possementezulu (BR), Zafrika brasil (BR), Thaide e DJ Hum (the forefathers of brazilian rap), Black ALien (br) and on... this whole event was called DULTCO99.
Now about the battle itself, to me the level was regular, with four or five relevant choreographies. In the first round the groups had to present a coreograph with a maximum of 8 minutes. The final first round classification was:
1st - Style Crew
2nd - Super Sonic B-Boys
3rd - Back Spin Crew
4th - UBI
Next day (8th), the battle itself - in portuguese we call it "RACHA" - happened.
The 1st and the 2nd battled in order to know who was the best crew. The Super Sonic BBoys guys were very, very consistent, up movements, floor movements, boggies, lock, footworks, power movements, everything. The Style Crew were'nt bad, but some little mistakes and very few impact moves were done. The Super sonic's did not make any mistake during their routine. Unique. So, the winner was announced and the SUPER SONIC'S BBOYS were the winners.
Also the bboy DTR won the "BBOY EXAMPLE AWARD".
Now the group is the official representant of brasil at the international BOTY99.

Best single dancer: PA (Move From The Other Side)
REPORT:
The BOTY east always is a highlight within the series of BOTY eliminations. The eastern german crews have a different style and the atmosphere always is different from events in western germany. The audience gives more props even to the less good crews. The last two east BOTYs ended up with a close final battle between Moves From The Other Side (Leipzig) and Fresh In Attack (East Berlin) who are the best crews in eastern Germany. Both years Moves From The Other Side won the final so this year again it was time for a revenge for Fresh In Attack ...
This years event took place in a bigger hall cause especially the last one was totally overcrowded. Almost 1000 people came to see altogether 18 top eastern Germany crews. Spax was the host of the night, on the wheels one had DJ Mirko Machine and Studio 17. The jury consisted of Michael and Vartan (Flying Steps), Toney Toon (Unique Wizzards), Steve and finally Thomas (Battle of the Year).
The quality of many crews was to be compared with the other BOTY heats which happened the weeks before. Too many crews seem to forget how to dance and did too much (bad) comedy and theatre play in in their performances. This is a general development I have seen on all BOTY eliminations this year, including Scandinavia and Switzerland. The crews should put more emphasis on the dance and the style for the future.
The whole first part of the comptetition with 7 crews almost included boring performances. The second part had some better crews like Fresh In Attack, Rocking Skillz, Breaking Barrage, Per Anhalt and of course Moves From The Other Side. For the judges it was very easy to define the 2 crews for the battle for first place. Like every year Fresh In Attack and Moves From The Other Side had a much better quality than all other crews. The battle for third place was between the young and talented Rocking Skillz Crew from Potsdam and the experienced Sure Schock Rockerz including b-girl Petra from Dessau and boogie legend Beatschmidt also from Dessau. Rocking Skillz won this battle cause they had more power, were more enthusiastic and had the better battle moves. Crews like Rocking Skillz will be the future of the german b-boying if they stay together, keep on practising and put emphasis on the dance.
The highlight of the night definetely was the final battle between Fresh In Attack and Moves From The Other Side. The atmosphere within the audience was incredible and the battle was a classic eastern Germany "b-boy derby". Moves From The Other Side, including old school boogie dancer Cookie, showed very clean and controlled (air) moves. Fresh In Attack had a big variety of dancing skillz from funny boogie and pop locking sequences by Pat to styles and power moves, including airtwists, by Hawk and Rico. Finally it was almost impossible for the judges to decide who won this battle. After a long discussion the jury gave the first place to Fresh In Attack who also won the price of the best show. PA from Moves From The Other Side won the price of the best single dancer for being down steadily with b-boying for so many years.
Finally I would like to thank all of the participating crews for being so friendly and open minded. A lot of western crews should look up to these crews, they still have a real hip hop community. Big respect to b-boy Harry, Reno and Steinhaus for putting this event together !
12. June, B-Berlin Open 3, JFZ Chips, Berlin, Germany
BOTY elimination for Berlin crews
RESULTS:
1. Five Amoks - qualified for german national B.O.T.Y.
2. Wildstyle Motives - qualified for german national B.O.T.Y.
3. Spinning Locks - qualified for german national B.O.T.Y.
REPORT:
The B-Berlin Open, the official BOTY elimination for Berlin crews, took place on the 12th of june in the Youth Centre Chips. This event was strictly underground. The organizers had big problems with finding a good location the weeks before the event. Finally they decided just to do it in a small location only for the crews and their friends. What happened was a very peaceful party with a good vibe and about 250 spectators including 8 participating crews from Berlin. Within the audience there were Storm (Battle Squad) and Amigo (Flying Steps) who also did an interview and report about the event for MTV, which was broadcasted a couple of days later on MTV. Jakob (Funky Grossangriff), Fadi (Funky Grossangriff) and Telle were the judges. One highlight of the contest were the "Funky Grossangriff Juniors" who are very young and talented. At the end the following 3 crews were qualified for the national BOTY: Five Amoks, Wildstyle Motives and Spinning Locks.
Thanx to Kalle who put this event together.
29. May, Mnster Battle, Skaters Palace, Mnster, Germany

RESULTS:
1. Fresh Force - qualified for german national B.O.T.Y.
2. Old Street - qualified for german national B.O.T.Y.
3. Crazy Style Rockers - qualified for german national B.O.T.Y.
4. Tuff Style Attack
REPORT:
15 crews from northern and western Germany came to Mnster on the 29th of may to challenge for participating in the national BOTY. The crews came from up north Flensburg (Da Force) and all the way down from south western Germany Koblenz (Crazy Style Rockers).
Because of the weather the temperatures outside and of course inside the location were extreme high but anyway altogether 600 spectators came to see the event.
Already during the warm up before the event one could see that a lot of good crews and high quality single dancers were joining the event. Well known dancers like Speedy (Battle Squad), Micha (Flying Steps), Benny (Flying Steps former BCA) and Pat (Freshn Attack) were judging. During the first round the 15 crews presented their shows. One could see many talented young crews and single dancers but also many crews using the same "boring" routines and sound effects.
In the pause the "Kiez Show" from Berlin was performed. This is a dance project with different Berlin dancers from Flying Steps and Freshn Attack. The choreographie of the show is made by Storm. The show includes locking routines but also incredible styles and power moves performed by the individual dancers. The star of the show definetely is Benny (Flying Steps) who burned with absolutely incredible airtwist combinations. He made clear why at the moment b-boys all around are talking about him !
After the first round Tuff Style Attack (Kiel) and Crazy Style Rockers (Koblenz) battled for third place. This battle was very clear, after a couple of minutes it was clear that Tuff Style Attack had no chance against the talented young boys from the Crazy Style Rockers. B-Boy Anthony from Crazy Style Rockers amazed the crowd and the judges with incredible "Suicide Moves".
The final battle was between Fresh Force (Ldenscheid) and Old Street (Dsseldorf). This was a very tight battle and it was very hard for the judges to decide who was winning. Fresh Force had better battle moves and the crowd standed behind them but Old Street seemed to be more calm and had a better strategie, also they had two very nice lockers who kicked good solos and routines during the final battle. But at the end Fresh Force was the winning crew.
Respect to Maceo and Lorenz Sd who did a very good job with the organization of the event.
22. May, Battle Of The South, Capitol, Mannheim, Germany

Hosts: Jelly Jam, Torch
DJs: Larry D, Double D
RESULTS:
1. Second Flood - qualified for german national B.O.T.Y.
2. Funky Fam - qualified for german national B.O.T.Y.
3. Extreme Dope - qualified for german national B.O.T.Y.
4. Moonstars
REPORT:
The already tradional Battle Of The South took place in the Capitol in Mannheim on Saturday, the 22nd of May. About 900 people (audience and artists) came to the Capitol to see 15 crews competing in this years competition for selecting the best crew of South Germany. Further the first 3 crews qualified for this years national Battle Of The Year. Because of the slope of the location which used to be a cinema back in the day everbody had a good view to the stage. But this slope had unfortunately the cause that the B-Boys hardly could dance in the circles that were formed in the audience. That's why "only" the Locking and Popping dancers really could show their skills. The best condition for the B-Boys was found in the foyer where Swift and Speedy (Battle Squad) set the highlights.
The hosts of the evening were Torch and Jelly who rocked the crowd as usual. Between and after the competition the DJs Double D and Larry D made people dance to Electro and 80ies Funk. The judge consisted of Swift & Speedy (Battle Squad), Steve (Point Blank), Freeze (Unique Wizzards) and Marc (Move to Kill).
The competition was again splitted in 2 groups. And after the 2 best crews of each group had battled for the first place of each group, the 2 winners battled in the big final for the title. A lot of new crews presented themselves and unfortunately some of the most famous crews (Unique Wizzards, Rockin Till Death, Step 2 Diz..) didn't enter this years contest. For the first time in Germany an all B-Girl crew named "In Weiblicher Gesellschaft" took part in the contest and they convinced with a good show. Typically for the South the highlights of most shows were the Locking routines. But unfortunately the audience never really supported the dancers on stage during the shows...
Funky Family, Moonstars, The Second Flood, Floor Rockaz and Battle Rock Maniacs had the best shows. Before the battles took place the crews Unique Wizzards and Step 2 Diz danced against each other in a show battle. Unique Wizzards rocked the spot with Locking and Styles (Freeze & Tony Toone!!) and Step 2 Diz answered with powercombos.
The final for 3rd place was between Moonstars and Extreme Dope whereas Moonstars actually danced with visual predominance but in the end of the battle Extreme Dope could success with the better tactics.
The big final was between The Second Flood and Funky Fam. The battle was quite fast won by The Second Flood because of the powercombos (elbow-airtwist and airtwist-heaspin!!) of the 2 brothers (14 and 16 years old!) of Second Flood. Unfortunately also during the battles the audience never really got hype.
The whole event was organised with much routine by MoE and his M-Pire clan. Unfortunately there were also some negative points: The lino on stage was really bad!! And during the battles Moonstars touched the opponend several times and even threw an object.

REPORT:
Only 1500 came to see the national BOTY in Dresden. For the organizers of the BOTY this was a big failure, already during the event a discussion about the possible reasons started: Bad promotion ? Hot temperatures and nice weather during the night of the event ? Maybe the way to Dresden was too long for the western germans ? Too many b-boy events and BOTY eliminations during may and june ? Whatever, the organizers of the BOTY now start to think about if it really was a good decision to choose two eastern German cities as a venue. Everybody thinks about if enough people will come to the international BOTY on the 18th of september to Leipzig which is also in eastern Germany.
Anyway all the crews and artists came to the national BOTY to Dresden and there was a nice atmosphere in the crowd. All spectators had a good view on the big stage, the event happened in an old ice hockey arena. The whole organization team did an almost perfect job, in my opinion it was the most proffessional organized BOTY we ever had. We had a big media coverage with different TV stations, even a 6 minutes nationwide live TV broadcast of the judges showcase at the beginning of the event.
On the wheels of steel we had Def Cut from Switzerland and the local hero Studio 17. The event was hosted by Torch and ZM Jay. The jury consisted of Swift Rock, Special FX, Steve, Kerstin and Heiko. The 12 best German crews, who were qualified by the 4 different German regional eliminations before, entered the competition and at 7:30 PM the first crew, Spinning Locks from Berlin, was on stage.
During the first round while all 12 crews presented a 7 minutes show each. Again it was getting clear that at the moment only a few German crews have international standard and new ideas. A lot of crews have some good single dancers but what is missing is the special charisma and a steady proffessional appearance. Only a few crews exist till a long time with the same dancers but these crews have a big advantage and much more proffessional appearance.
The highlights of the first round where: Moves From The Other Side (Leipzig), Second Flood (Speyer- winners of the BOTY South), Five Amox (Berlin- winners of the Berlin BOTY) and of course Fresh In Attack (Dresden- winners of the BOTY east). In the pauses there were rap shows by Torch, ZM Jay and as a guest appearence of Spax & DJ Mirko who did a 15 minutes freestyle set. The judges, lead by Spaiche, did a very proffessional job and it was easy for them to decide about the 4 best crews for the finals: Five Amox (Berlin) vs. Moves From The Other Side (Leipzig) in the battle for third place and Fresh In Attack (Dresden) vs. Second Flood (Speyer) in the battle for first place.
The battle for third place began at 11 PM, it was a very tight battle in which both crews performed very nice: Moves From The Other Side with a lot of skillz, clean power moves and stylez and a nice boogie dancer (old school Cookie). Five Amox, including Derryl (Flying Steps) and Hong Yeng (a very talented b-boy from Berlin) had the typical fresh Berlin battle-style including incredible air move combinations by Ossama and Hong Yeng and pop locking sequences by Derryl. Finally Moves From The Other Side seemed to be a bit exhausted and had a lack of battle power, like in the final battle of the BOTY east two weeks ago. So Five Amox won the battle for third place and now are qualified for the international BOTY in september. At 11:30 PM the crowd was ready for the final batle between Fresh In Attack and Second Flood. Both crews had nice single dancers like Pat, Hawk and Rico on the Fresh In Attack side and the very young and talented dancer Chico on the Second Flood side. The audience got crazy while Hong Yeng did his air twist combinations and Fresh In Attack attacked Five Amox with funny battle moves and Pop Locking routines. After a short discussion within the jury the first price was given to Fresh In Attack who were more than happy to win the contest. Also the price of the best show was given to Fresh In Attack, Chico (Second Flood) won the price of the best single dancer of the night. I would like to thank the whole team for this event: Andi, Kai, Friedemann, Maceo, Danny, Swat Posse, Wostok Mob, MAD, Caramel, Cellkern, Kllifornia Posse, Kai & Dimi & Hartmut (Security heads) and all the others for doing a most perfect job !!!!!!!!!
Hopefully more people will come to see the international BOTY in Leipzig on the 18th of september.
05. June, B.O.T.Y. Switzerland, Saalsporthalle, Zrich, Switzerland

Rachdi (The Family / F), Tuff Kid (BCA / CH), Special FX (DK)
Hosts: Gordo, MC Liz (CH)
DJs: Scratch Perverts (UK), DefCut (CH)
RESULTS:
1. Crazy Force Crew - qualified for international B.O.T.Y.
2. Unik Version - qualified for international B.O.T.Y.
3. Rock Kids Crew
4. Up Side Down
REPORT:
The 5th of june was the date of the BOTY Switzerland which took place for the second time this year. The main organiser, Claude Hunkeler, rent a big location and already the flyers/booklets of the event let people know in advance that a big b-boy event, maybe the biggest in swiss b-boy history, will happen at that night.
The location was a sports gym in which the audience could sit and relax while watching the contest. The first impression of the location was a bit strange, it looked more like a sports event than a hip hop culture event but at latest after the contest begun the atmosphere was nice and finally the event ended up with a huge typical swiss party on different floors till the early morning.
About 4500 people came to see the event. MC Liz and Gordo were the hosts of the night, Scratch Perverts (UK) and Def Cut (CH) were the DJs for the contest. The jury consisted of well known international dancers: Swift (Battle Squad), Mauricio, Rachdi (The Family), Tuff Kid (BCA) and Special FX. Before the contest started the judges impressed the crowd with some of their skills.
Then it was time to compete: 18 crews from all over Switzerland came to challenge for the Swiss Championship.
To be honest the first part of the contest with altogether 8 crews was a bit boring. Many new crews performed without setting any highlights, new ideas and innovation.
After a break the second part with another 10 crews began and it started to get much more interesting. New school crews like the "Rock Kids Crew" or "Upside Down" showed the audience what the new style of b-boying is about and at the same time old school crews like "Apocalypse" showed that they still rock the floor. "Apocalypse" consisted of some legendary Swiss dancers like Frank, Power or Takit. Other highlights were a b-girl crew named "Guess What" from Lausanne and Neuchatel, "Unik Version" from Neuchatel with a good mixture of solos and a funny show. The absolute highlight was the performance of the "Crazy Force Crew" from Luzern who performed the best show of the night, in my opinion the best show they ever did ! They demonstrated the crowd and the younger generation what straight b-boying is all about.
For the judges it was not easy to decide which crews should battle for third place, finally they decided a battle between "Rock Kids Crew" and "Upside Down". This battle was kinda boring, the only highlights were some power move combinations on the "Rock Kids" side, especially by Burhan, who actually dances for "Flying Steps" (Berlin) and only joined the Swiss crew for the night. Burhan did incredible Airtwist - Turtle combis ... The battle for third place ended up in a long pop locking battle between the crews. Although "Upside Down" had much more style finally "Rock Kids Crew" won the battle.
Then it was time for the final battle. There was no doubt about which crews enter the final: "Unik Version" vs. "Crazy Force Crew". It was so cool to watch a battle between different dancers from totally different generations. The kids from "Unik Version" were about more than 10 years younger than Crazy, Magic and Mike from "Crazy Force". "Unik Version" kicked a lot of power moves and fresh combinations. The "Crazy Force Crew" was more calm and showed a lot of clean moves like Crazys swipes combinations or his superstylish backspins ending up in a headspin.
After all it was very hard for the judges to decide who was the winner. It was almost impossible to judge cause the crews represent two generations of dancing with totally different styles and moves. At the end the first place was given to the "Crazy Force Crew" who were a bit more clever, had the better strategie and better battle moves.
I am very happy that now "Crazy Force" and "Unik Version" represent Switzerland at the international BOTY in september cause they really were the best and the most sympatic crews of the night.
Finally it was so nice to see that old school crews still are able to battle the younger ones, showing them what the dance is all about and that new crews still respect them. This is what hip hop should be like !
Finally I would like to thank Claude for doing a perfect job ! People should stop critizising big events as commercial and sellout. Events like the BOTY Switzerland 99 have an immense influence on the scene, motivate the younger generation to practise and shows the public that b-boying/hip hop is the No. 1 youthculture at the moment. As long as the service for the dancers and the audience is good in my opinion the price of 40 Francs is absolutely justified ! Think about how much you spent on other concerts or buying clothes !
See you next year ....
22. May, B.O.T.Y. Scandinavia, Vagen, Gothenburg, Sweden
With Crews like Freestyle Phanatix (DK), Floor Techniques (S), Rythm Rockers (N), Visual Technics (F)
Hosts: Latino & Spookie (S)
Judges: Thomas & Akim (Germany), Nico & Jerker (S)
MCs: Gothenman
DJs: DJ Kristus & DJ ReAct
RESULTS:
1. Freestyle Phanatix (Denmark) - qualified for international B.O.T.Y.
2. Floor Technics (Sweden)
3. Funky Freaks (Norway)
4. Stumbling Moves (Norway)
Best Show: Floor Technics
Best single dancer: Uncut (Floor Technics)
REPORT:
Altogether 10 crews from Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland came down to the Scandinavian BOTY which happened on the 22nd of may in the Folkets Hus in Gothenburg/Sweden.
The athmosphere and the vibe during the event was very nice. It was like a flashback in time back to the "Battle of the Years" in the early years while it was still very underground.
About 550 people came from all over Scandinavia to watch the Scandinavian BOTY, the audience was very nice and enthusiastic, beside some stealings of clothes from the backstage area (seems to be sad but normal during Hip Hop events !) there was no trouble.
The high number of b-girls, including two b-girl crews from Finland and Norway, was very surprising. The girls had a nice style, good routines and top rocks. Especially the "Floor Technics" from Sweden, who finally did the second place, had three b-girls who did very well.
The battle for third place was a very close one between Funky Freaks (Norway) and Stumbling Moves (Norway). The Stumbling Moves had a cleaner style and did proper power moves but finally the Funky Freaks had a little better style and fresher battle moves so they won the battle for third place.
The final battle for first place was between Freestyle Phanatix (Denmark) and Floor Technics (Sweden). Already after the first round of the contest it was getting clear that Freestyle Phanatix was the dominating crew of the night but during the final battle it was getting very close cause Floor Technics had three nice b-girls, a couple of good single dancers including a young boy called Uncut who finally was announced the best single dancer of the night.
On the side of the Freestyle Phanatix there were two b-girls and single dancers like Joel, Denis and Kim who all had different dance varieties from power moves to styles and locking. At the end Floor Technics had the better girls and maybe better battle moves but Freestyle Phanatix were cleaner and showed more dancing skills from breaking to boogie.
Freestyle Phanatix won the event and are now qualified for the international BOTY to represent Scandinavia. They got 500 US $ which will be used for their travel to the BOTY on the 18th of september in Germany.
Floor Technics got the price of the best show and their dancer Uncut, around the age of 10 years, got the price of the best single dancer. All winning crews got trophies and certificates.
Finally the event left a very positive impression on all participated and involved persons, including the crews. Hopefully they will spread the news all around Scandinavia so next year more people will attend the Scandinavian BOTY.
Big respect and thank you goes out to the organizers Latino and K.Sun from Gothenburg who did an almost perfect job !
